6 Georgian Italian Carved Dyed Horn Protection Chatelaine Charms on Gilt Metal
Antique Georgian Italian Carved Red Horn Protection Charms
This rare and striking set of six Georgian-era Italian charms is masterfully carved from dyed horn, boasting an intense, saturated crimson hue. These "protection" or "luck" charms were traditionally worn in Southern Italy to ward off the Malocchio (Evil Eye) and bring good fortune to the wearer. Finding a cohesive set of dyed horn charms in this vibrant condition is exceptionally rare.
The Six Charms & Their Symbolism
Each charm serves a specific purpose in folk tradition:
• Il Gobbo (The Hunchback): A classic Italian symbol of good luck and prosperity. Legend says rubbing the "hump" of a Scartellato brings immediate fortune.
• The Leg/Boot: Often representing safe travels or the "kicking away" of bad luck.
• Mano Cornuto (Hand of the Horns): A powerful gesture used to ward off the Evil Eye and protect against malevolent spirits.
• The Slipper/Shoe: Historically symbolic of domestic stability and protection of the home.
• Arm with Dagger: A defensive amulet meant to "cut through" envy and protect the wearer from physical or spiritual harm.
• The Horn/Cornicello (Phrygian Cap Style): What appears to be a triquetra/cap is likely a stylized Cornicello variation, designed to symbolize fertility and strength.
Details & Condition
• Construction: Six hand-carved charms suspended from original gilt metal chains.
• Attachment: Features an antique gilt brass dog clip (added) for easy attachment to a watch chain or necklace.
• Condition: Excellent antique condition. Under magnification, there is a tiny chip on the pinky of the Mano Cornuto, which is common for organic materials of this age and does not detract from the visual impact.
• Dimensions: Approximately 3.5" (9 cm) in total length including the clip.
• Weight: 6.2 grams.
Collector's Note
Red horn is often used as a more accessible (and legal) alternative to Mediterranean Red Coral, which carries the same protective associations in Italian culture. This set is a perfect "ready-to-wear" piece of history for collectors of mourning jewelry, sentimental charms, or Victorian/Georgian talismans.
These charms will arrive carefully presented in a gift box.
